Anonymous FTP
Anonymous FTP allows anyone to upload and download content from your disk space. Anonymous FTP is not available for our virtual hosting customers. Dedicated and co-located customers may have Anonymous FTP enabled on their servers if they desire.

ASP Scripting
ASP stands for Active Server Pages. ASP allows developers to utilize the latest in server-side scripting technologies using VBScript, JavaScript, or PerlScript. ASP is much like CGI programming, but designed for the NT Platform.

CGI
CGI, or Common Gateway Interface, is used to accomplish functions not supported by basic HTML programming. All HostGlobe UNIX accounts include your own CGI Directory, a common CGI Library, and PERL.

Data Transfer / Hits
Any traffic to and from your Web site is data transfer. Visitors surfing to your site, as well as published updates to your website, is data transfer.

Detailed Web Statistics
Detailed information about who is visiting your Web page.

Data Storage / Disk Space
Disk space is the amount of space your Web page occupies on a server's hard drive.

Domain Name Pointers
Additional domain pointers are an excellent way to drive more traffic to your Web site. Domain pointers allow other domain names to lead visitors to your main Web site. 

E-Mail Auto Responders
Auto responders send an automatic e-mail back to those who e-mail your Web page. For example, confirmation of online orders.

E-Mail POP3
E-mail that comes with your hosting package. Your e-mail can be set-up from our Web-based control panel to read yourname@yourcompany.com.

Software we place on our servers that gives the ability to utilize all of FrontPage's® abilities. 

FTP
FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is the method used to transfer files to and from your website.

Full Tape Backup
A method to back-up all server files.

Java Servlets
Servlets are Java-based applications installed on a server that run all the time. Currently we do not support the use of Java Servlets on our servers.

Microsoft® Access Database
Access databases allow you to create Web sites capable of dynamically generated Web pages, simple search engines, small shopping carts, and other features that require the storage of data for retrieval by Web site visitors. To use Access databases, you will need to have knowledge in ASP and VBScript programming.

Microsoft® Index Server
A search engine facility for NT-based Web sites.

Microsoft® Visual InterDev 6.0
A tool commonly used for designing large Web sites that use multiple databases, and require large amounts of ASP code. Visual InterDev also uses special extensions for some of its advanced features. While you may use Visual InterDev for building pages that use databases and require much ASP code, the special InterDev extensions are not supported with our Web hosting plans. Dedicated and co-located servers may have these extensions installed if needed.

Microsoft® SQL 7.0 Database
SQL 7.0 is a high-end database system capable of hundreds of thousands of transactions per day. If your Web site does a large number of database transactions and you are using an Access database, you may want to upgrade to an SQL database. SQL databases are not only faster, but they are more flexible, and they can take the stress that will make an Access database fail.

MySQL Database
An SQL database program for UNIX servers.

Password Protected Pages
Password protected pages allow you to restrict access to certain Web pages with the use of passwords.

Raw Log Files
Used for statistical analysis.

Real Audio / Video
Technology from RealNetworks™ that allows Web pages to stream audio and video.

Shockwave
A multimedia program by MacroMedia.

Shopping Cart
Gives customers the ability to place items for purchase in a virtual "shopping cart." These items can then be purchased at one time when "checking out."

SSL Encryption
SSL, or Security Socket Layer, encrypts your customers' credit card numbers, as well as other confidential information. This allows for secure online business. When your Web page has SSL, your page will show a small gold lock or key in the lower right hand side of your browser. 

Static IP Address
The internet's version of a telephone number. Every Web site has its own IP address.

Unix Shells
Shell accounts allow you to log into a server with your username and password to perform advanced programming with technologies such as Perl, CGI, C, etc. Due to the security issues that arise from UNIX Shell access, we do not allow shell access.

UPS Power Backup
UPS, or uninterrupted power source, is a method used to keep our equipment working in the event of a power outage.

VBScript
VBScript stands for Visual Basic Scripting. VBScript is a special subset of Microsoft® Visual Basic designed specifically for the programming of advanced Web sites. VBScript allows users to create dynamically generated pages that interact with databases, along with many other things. VBScript will not run on a UNIX server.
